Sofia Ratcovich - Founder & CEO

Sofia is a climate activist and founder of Zero Waste Company. Zero Waste Co. officially launched in 2012 to assist clients in hosting events that are more socially and environmentally responsible. She’s been a trailblazer in developing and implementing sustainability initiatives for special events of all kinds with the goal of maximizing the efficiency of all operations, minimizing waste, and creating donation partnerships.

A first generation Mexican immigrant, being resourceful and mindful of consumption was part of not just her culture but also her daily life as a child. To this day she continues to reuse jam jars and only wears second hand or vintage clothing. However, her passion for environmental justice formally began when she helped to create a campus wide recycling program at her high school and was amplified when she became pregnant with her first child in 2005. As a young mom, Sofia began to research everything she was putting on and into her body in detail and has since continued on a quest to always keep learning.  She holds two associate degrees from Santa Monica College in Environmental Studies and General Science. She later earned a B.A from California State University Dominguez Hills in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peace building. Sofia has done work with several environmental organizations including Global Inheritance, Surfrider Foundation and 5 Gyres. She has also twice completed Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership training. A lifelong activist, she has been interviewed on Spanish radio and TV channels bringing awareness to the plastic pollution crisis and the dangers of neighborghood oil drilling, always advocating for renewable energy and a just transition away from fossil fuels.

For the past 15 years, Sofia has relentlessly worked to solve the climate crisis in order to secure a better world for her 3 children and future generations on Earth. Everything about Zero Waste Company has been her way of helping shift the paradigm, and break the mold by challenging the status quo. Sofia’s mission is to redesigning systems and use her knowledge and creativity to help shift businesses and individuals towards a regenerative future.

Because once we know better, we need to do better.

Stephanie Whyte

Director of Operations

Stephanie is an educator with fierce roots in sustainability, movement and civic engagement. Her interest in creative waste solutions stems from her experiences growing up along the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and seeing the tremendous volume of plastics washing ashore. After moving to California to study Human Biology and Environmental Studies at USC, she began working with the 5 Gyres Institute. There, she managed their plastic-free campaigns, conducted marine research on ocean plastic pollution, and spearheaded their global Ambassador program, where she first met Sofia.

Recognizing that knowing too much about the plight of our environment can leave people feeling jaded and disillusioned, she shifted into teaching sustainability through instilling joy and lasting connections to the natural environment through play. Today, Steph works with Zero Waste Company to integrate her knowledge and passion for true physical, mental and environmental wellness with her commitment to providing memorable experiences for people while minimizing their ecological impact.
